  • Pushkar is a holy town centered around Pushkar Lake. It is surrounded by ghats - steps leading down to holy water.
  • Of course there were cows at the ghats. Of course.

  • Pushkar draws a huge number of tourists, from Indian pilgrims to western hippies who are attracted to the availability of marijuana. (Alcohol is forbidden in this holy city, but pot is apparently ok.) The street stalls have all manner of tourist junk, including more than one booth dedicated to knives, swords, and brass knuckles.
  • The hotel in Pushkar had a helpful instruction guide posted in the elevator.
  • Jaipur is famous for block printed textiles. To make them, they have wooden cut-outs of various parts of an image, then ink them and very carefully stamp each piece.
  • This security guard at Nahargarh Fort above Jaisalmer is buying the monkey's good behavior with bananas.
  • View over Jaipur from Nahargarh Fort. Jaipur is called the Pink City, although the color is more... taupe.
  • Jal Mahal palace in Man Sagar Laie in Jaipur.
  • City Palace, Jaipur
  • The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is an observatory completed in 1738. It contains many astronomical instruments like this one.
  • This is the world's largest sundial.
  • Many of the instruments look like art installations. These sundial things were for measuring zodiac constellations.
  • The instruments reminded me of Inhotim in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
  • The Hawa Mahal in Jaipur is a palace constructed so that women of the royal household could watch festivals without being seen.
  • Amber (pronounced "Amer") Fort outside Jaipur.
  • To climb the ramp to Amber Fort, you take an elephant. Those little howdahs kept sliding to one side or the other. I would rather have walked, I think.
  • Chand Baori is a huge stepwell outside Jaipur.
  • Stepwells are awesomely geometric.
