Mongolian summer houses outside of Ulaan Baatar

  • Mongolian summer houses outside of Ulaan Baatar
  • More Mongolian summer houses outside of Ulaan Baatar
  • Mongolian wedding photos in front of Ghenghis Khan
  • The aiprort in Dalanzadgad
  • The Ice Canyon in Yolyn Am. The shade is so deep here that winter ice survives well into summer.
  • We rode horses into the canyon.
  • A traditional Ger, with its owner and my driver. Note the solar panel and satelite dish.
  • My "tourist ger". We had bathrooms with hot water attached.
  • The plain of the Gobi from the Gurvan Saikhan mountains. While it's a desert, it's actually covered in low scrub that's suitable for animal grazing.
  • The Gurvan Saikhan (or Three Beauties)
  • There were many, many petroglyphs scratched into the rocks on the top of this obviously sacred mountain.
  • My guide said that they're 40,000 years old, but at least the ones with men riding horses can't be older than 3500 BC, since that's about when the horse was domesticated in central Asia.
  • Petroglyphs are drawn to aid in hunting.
  • The small Buddhist temple in Bayanzag.
  • School in Bayanzag. The girls dress up like maids. The boys wear their best suits.
  • Bayanzag flaming cliffs. This is where American Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first dinosaur eggs (among may other fossils) in the 1930s.
  • Camels stink.
  • My guide Binderya on top of a rare Gobi sand dune.
