  • St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hanoi. This is where the bus from the airport dropped me.
  • Propaganda poster in Hanoi. I was stoked to find out they really look like this!
  • The Flag Tower in Hanoi. Built in 1812.
  • Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum.
  • The honor guard marches near Ho Chi Minh's tomb.
  • I'm not sure what this building is, but it sure is Communist!
  • The One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi. Originally built in 1049, but the French destroyed it in 1954. (I love it when something bad in Vietnam is someone else's fault besides the Americans!) It was rebuilt.
  • I was not wearing the short.
  • Balloons floating over Hoan Kiem lake in the center of old Hanoi.
  • The crowds entering Ngoc Son temple on an island in Hoan Kiem.
  • The temple has a sacred embalmed turtle. Except it really just looks like a crappy sculpture.
  • Poster of Ho Chi Minh in my hostel.
  • Crowds at the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first national university. Built in 1070.

  • I dunno... some urn thing or something.
  • 'Oh my! What's this in the display case?'
  • 'Why, it's a gold-plated turtle statue!' Weird.
  • Andrea being disrespectful at the Hoa Lo prison. This is the infamous 'Hanoi Hilton' where downed American pilots were kept during the war. John McCain spent time here.
  • Sarah pulling the same trick. The prison was used by the French to hold Vietnamese prisoners before the Vietnamese used it for American pilots.
  • Typical street in Hanoi--although this one is surprisingly free of motorcycle traffic.
